In Indelible Ink

tattooI recently had the luxury of spending a great deal of time around a pool, which put me in view of a lot of skin.  Tattooed skin.  Most of the tattoos were the usual hohum variety with the odd shocker thrown in (a blindfolded woman with a gun held to her head), but it was the words that interested me.  What pithy statement was so meaningful to someone that they felt compelled to permanently mark themselves with it?  One was “No regrets”, which appeared mid-way down a woman’s back.  Since she didn’t look much more than 22, I couldn’t help but think, “Oh, there’s still plenty of time, girlfriend.”  Another was “Actions speak louder than words.”  This made me wonder whether getting a tattoo counted as an action, albeit one that still left you with a bunch of words.  Still another was “Live, laugh, love”.  I thought the cadence of the words would have been better as “Live, love, laugh”, but I can understand wanting to end with love.  Because at the end of the day, while actions may count for more, it’s still nice to have someone whisper sweet nothings in your ear.
